The perfect motorhome that suits everyone has yet to be made, and this truth is the foundation of a large RV aftermarket industry.

There are many tempting upgrades and improvements out there, but some come at the risk of wasting your money or reducing your payload and independence. To help you separate the worthwhile modifications from the redundant and useless ones, this guide will give you an overview of what's available, then highlight three upgrades worth considering and one that probably isn't.

It is a question motorhome buyers are sometimes too polite to ask on the showroom floor: which toilet setup is the easiest to use? Which smells the least?

A motorhome’s toilet system shapes how far off-grid you can go, how often you have to empty it out, and whether the vehicle stays fresh and hygienic through a long stretch of travel.

This guide breaks down the two toilet systems you will realistically choose between in a New Zealand motorhome – a cassette toilet and a composting toilet. We’ll go over the pros and cons of each, and how they fit New Zealand's self-containment rules. We’ll also explain why we have landed on the cassette toilet as the best all-round solution for travelling in comfort.

The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) has around 300 campsites set within national parks, beside lakes, and along the coast of Aotearoa New Zealand. Many are accessible by motorhome, making it easy to park up and enjoy some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes.

There are several ways to pay for DOC campsites, including the annual DOC Campsite Pass. Currently priced at $295 for one adult, the pass is valid for 12 months and can be used at eligible DOC campsites around the country.

But does the DOC Campsite Pass offer good value? What exclusions or extra costs do you need to know about? And how do the 2026 green-warrant changes affect where you can stay?

In this guide, we’ll break down what motorhomers need to know about the DOC Campsite Pass, how to calculate whether it’s worth the investment, and how your choice of motorhome can impact where you can stay.

If you own a car, you'll already know the Warrant of Fitness (WoF) — that regular check that keeps your vehicle safe and legal on New Zealand roads.

A Certificate of Fitness (CoF) is the one you may not have met yet. It's the equivalent for heavier vehicles, including many premium motorhomes. It sometimes gets written off as extra admin, but a better way to see it is as a mark of quality: a commercial-grade safety standard that protects both you and your investment.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the differences between WoF and CoF, the costs, the inspection process, and what it all means when you're choosing a motorhome.

You've packed the motorhome, hitched up the boat trailer, and you're cruising north for a long weekend. Then you're pulled over and weighed, and told you're driving on the wrong licence.

You're stunned. Your motorhome only needs a Class 1 car licence, and you've driven it that way for years without a problem. So what changed?

The trailer. Add its weight to the motorhome's, and you can cross into "heavy" territory without realising – where the rules shift, and a Class 1 licence no longer covers you. It's an easy trap to fall into, and it all comes down to the one number that drives nearly every motorhome rule in New Zealand: weight.

Because heavier vehicles carry more risk, the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) has stricter rules around who can drive one.

In this blog, we'll cover when you need a Class 2 licence, what the medical involves, and how the inspection and speed rules change once your motorhome counts as "heavy."

"Noctourism" – travel built around the night sky rather than the daytime – is gaining some attention overseas. Around the world, travellers are flying long-haul and booking out lodges just to stand under a properly dark sky for one night.

You don't have to go anywhere. New Zealand is one of the best places on Earth to see the night sky in all its glory, and if you own a motorhome, you already have everything you need to get there on an average Tuesday. This country is home to several certified Dark Sky places: reserves, sanctuaries, and townships officially recognised by DarkSky International for exceptionally low light pollution, usually thanks to shielded street lighting and strict outdoor lighting rules.

The South Island also sits close enough to the auroral zone that the Aurora Australis is a realistic sight in winter – no polar expedition required, just a decent weekend away.

That said, there are some things to plan for first. In this blog, we'll cover six accessible, legal spots to view the night sky from your motorhome, plus everything else you need to know about freedom camping and winter travel before you go.

Most of us know our rights when making a major purchase like a car or a house. A motorhome sits in an odd space where it’s both at once.

That habitation area brings its own list of things that can go wrong, on top of anything you'd worry about with a regular vehicle. The cabin can develop a leak, appliances can play up, and the solar or gas systems can fail. And that's before we even get to the usual mechanical faults that come with any motor vehicle.

So what legal protections do you actually have if the motorhome of your dreams turns out faulty, or doesn't do what the dealer told you it would?

New Zealand law gives you some very strong customer protections. Let's take a closer look at what they are and how they apply when you're buying a motorhome.

Fuel pump prices are a hot topic at the moment, and for Kiwi motorhome owners planning their next getaway, keeping travel costs predictable is top of mind. When you own your own rig, you want the freedom to hit the road spontaneously without worrying about what the trip is going to cost you in fuel.

This guide looks at how to keep your touring cost-effective, given the current fuel climate. The good news is that hitting the road still makes great financial sense – but a few smart adjustments can make a big difference.

We'll look at how different vehicle designs stack up on fuel economy, what those numbers mean for your wallet on a typical trip, and the practical habits savvy motorhomers can use to keep their running costs down.

Motorhomes are a deeply technical subject. There are weight limits, warrant requirements, self-containment rules, and specifications that vary depending on where and how a vehicle was built. Get any of them wrong, and a dream purchase can turn into an expensive lesson.

Some dealers give you a brochure. Others just hand over the keys. We spend every month of the year writing comprehensive guides on every part of motorhome ownership.

This guide explains why Wilderness Motorhomes invests so heavily in educating New Zealand travellers and buyers, and why that knowledge matters when you're making a purchase of this size.

For many Kiwis, a motorhome is the single largest asset they own after their family house. And yet, a surprising number of owners insure theirs with a standard car policy – one that was never designed to cover awnings, solar systems, skylights, habitation appliances, or the full cost of a drivetrain repair.

This guide covers everything you need to know to protect your investment properly: how motorhome insurance works, what Agreed Value really means, what's covered and what isn't, and how to compare policies side by side.

By the time you're done reading, you'll know exactly what questions to ask before you sign anything.

Do you want to park up somewhere stunning that’s far from the crowd? You’ll need an onboard power supply system that will allow you to camp independently wherever you like, for as long as you want.

The problem is that most new motorhomes don't come with enough built-in power for more than a few days of off-grid camping. That's why many motorhome owners choose to upgrade their power setup after buying.

There are many different kinds of people who come to work at Wilderness. Some are industry veterans, and some fell into it on a whim. Graham Skinner is a unique kind – a retired owner of a Carado motorhome who loved the lifestyle so much that eventually, he decided he wanted to work for the dealership.

Graham is part of the welcome team at Wilderness, driving guests between the airport and the base and helping them get oriented before they hit the road. But before he ever set foot in the Wilderness yard as an employee, he was a customer.

He and his partner spend significant chunks of the year travelling around New Zealand in their Carado. When he talks to guests arriving at the base, wide-eyed and full of questions, he's speaking from experience.

It's turned out to be a great fit in both directions: Graham gets to spend his days doing what he loves, and guests get someone who has owned the same vehicle and driven the same roads they're about to explore.

We spoke to Graham to find out his favourite things about motorhome travel, what brought him to the Wilderness team, and his top tips for a motorhome buyer.
