How to use this calculator
Enter the estimated purchase price of your preferred motorhome, select whether it's on a CoF or WoF compliance programme and indicate where you will be storing your motorhome (at home or in a paid storage facility). The calculator will use this information to calculate an estimated cost for five years of motorhome ownership. This calculator works best when viewed on desktop.

- This calculator assumes the purchase of a new motorhome.
- All costs are indicative only.
- Vehicle registration fees are approximately $200 annually for all motorhomes. Exact annual registration cost will vary based on motorhome axles and weight. Get the exact rego cost for your preferred motorhome using the NZTA RightCar tool.
- Compliance fees vary depending on whether your motorhome requires a CoF or WoF. CoF and WoF fees are based on current VTNZ compliance costs. You will need a new CoF every six months. A WoF is required after three years and then annually. For this calculator, we have assumed the first CoF or WoF is included in the motorhome purchase price.
- The Road user charge (RUC) figure is based on the current NZTA rate of $76 per 1000km for 3500kg GVM or under and $82 per 1000km for over 3500kg GVM. Both rates assume that the motorhome has two single-tyred axles and is under 6000kg GVM. If your motorhome doesn’t fall into this category, you can find additional RUC rates. It assumes that 5000km will be driven each year. The first 1000km of RUC are assumed to be included in the motorhome purchase price.
- The Servicing figure is based on the recommended servicing schedule of one vehicle service per year. Prices are derived from New Zealand Fiat dealership service prices.
- A majority of motorhomes for sale in New Zealand require an annual water tightness test. Failure to complete the test will affect the warranty. The water tightness test figure is based on the Wilderness price of $126.50.
- Most new motorhomes will need few if any Replacement parts in the first five years of motorhome ownership. The only replacement parts included in the calculator is a set of tyres.
- Depreciation assumes 10% in year 1, then 8% as per the Inland Revenue Department depreciation rates but may be as high as 15% in the first year of ownership.
- Storage figure assumes no cost for storing a motorhome at a private residence and $250 per month ($3000 annual) for commercial uncovered storage. This figure is based on an estimate from Auckland storage facilities. Costs may be less in the provinces.
- Insurance is excluded from this calculator. Insurance is an important aspect of looking after your new motorhome. A number of factors will dictate your yearly insurance premium. These include both driver and vehicle factors including: claims history, age, driver experience, vehicle value, geographic location and intended use (permanently living or recreational). Whether the motorhome is on a CoF or a WoF is also important as motorhomes on a COF motorhomes have a higher charge due to the Fire Service Levy. It is best to get a quote on insurance that is specific to your situation. Equally, it is essential that you compare policy wordings to make sure you have the protection you require.
