Buying a motorhome is a big deal – often the biggest investment you’ll make outside of your family home. When the stakes are that high, finding a dealer you can actually trust is the secret to moving from "anxious buyer" to "confident explorer."

While the process is a bit like buying a car, the reality is much more personal. After all, you’re not just picking out a ride; you’re choosing a bedroom, a kitchen, and a lounge on wheels. You’re also thinking about a whole host of different warranties and servicing needs. The right dealer should make that complexity disappear, using their years of experience to help you choose right.

In this guide, we’ve scouted the top dealers in our two main RV centres – Auckland and Christchurch – to find the ones that truly walk the walk. We focused on the things that actually matter to owners:

  • Genuine after-sales support (for when you're actually out on the road).

  • Clear handovers and warranties (so there are no "hidden" surprises).

  • Raving customer reviews from the local RV community.

What are the key signs of a reputable motorhome dealer in New Zealand?

Let’s look at the six areas that are critical to the establishment of a good reputation for a motorhome dealership:

1: Are they a registered motor trader?

Any business selling motorhomes must be listed on the Motor Vehicle Traders Register by law. This registration means that buyers are protected by the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act. Also, look for the additional blue sign that identifies that the dealership is a member of the Motor Trade Association (MTA). The MTA regularly audits its members to ensure consistent ethical conduct and offers a free, independent mediation service to sort out any disputes.

2: Customer reviews and reputation

Review 5 stars

The great thing about the internet is that dealers can’t hide the truth on sites like Google or Facebook. These platforms are goldmines for seeing how a business actually treats people. Instead of worrying about a single grumpy comment, look for patterns – if multiple people mention the same issue, it’s a red flag. On the flip side, consistent praise for their service is a fantastic sign that you’ll be well looked after too. A quick tip: use Google’s star ratings as an instant filter and feel free to skip any dealership sitting below a 4.0.

3: Transparent and robust warranty coverage

When you buy a new motorhome, you're actually getting a few different warranties at once. There’s one for the vehicle itself (the engine and chassis), another for the living area and appliances, and usually a third specifically for water leaks. Just keep in mind that the water-tightness warranty often requires an annual check-up to stay valid. A helpful dealer will explain all of this in plain English and let you know if those warranties can be passed on to a new owner if you ever decide to sell.

4: Handover experience

wilderness driving orientation

Will you leave the dealership with a complete understanding of how everything works on board? Good dealers will put in the mahi to ensure a comprehensive orientation. Walk away from those who would rather just hand over the many keys.

Before leaving the dealership, you will need to know:

  • How every system on board works

  • Whether there are hidden storage areas in the floor

  • How a toilet cassette can be emptied and replaced without incident

  • How to fill and flush the water tanks

  • How the electrics change from 12v to 240v, and the sources of the supply

  • How to operate all skylights, windows and vents

  • How to operate the control system for the habitation electronics

  • How to heat and/or cool the motorhome interior

  • How all the driver’s cab controls work, including any touch screen on the dashboard

5: Comprehensive after-sales and service network

Any recon of a potential dealership for your motorhome purchase needs to go further than just the comfy, well-presented showroom.

Ask to see the service and parts departments. That way, you can confirm that the dealership is staffed by qualified technicians, has replacement parts stocked locally, and will provide easy access for regular maintenance and servicing. If the dealership can’t offer a service on-site, can they direct you to an approved provider of that service located nearby?

6: Manufacturer relationships

Motorhome manufacturers generally vet dealerships carefully before granting them the franchise to sell their products. That’s so they can protect the reputation of their brand. It’s therefore a good sign when the dealership has a strong relationship with either a local and/or overseas motorhome manufacturer.

It’s even better when that dealership is the exclusive point of sale for well-established motorhome brands. For example, Wilderness Motorhome Sales is the only place you can buy the new imported Carado, Bürstner and HYMER motorhomes from the industry-leading Erwin Hymer Group in New Zealand. Other dealerships can only sell NZ-registered Carado, HYMER and Bürstner motorhomes when they are secondhand.

Who are the top-rated motorhome dealers in Auckland?

Burstner TD744 walkthrough

It’s no surprise that Auckland remains the heart of New Zealand’s motorhome scene. As the country's biggest hub, Auckland accounts for nearly a quarter of all new private registrations (22.9%), according to the Motorhome Market Industry Report (2019–2025). Here’s where you’ll find the best motorhome dealerships in our largest city, and why they are the best:

European Motorhomes

Google star rating: 4.9

If you’ve decided to purchase a Roller Team motorhome, this is one of the best places in Auckland to buy it, judging from the positive feedback from customers. Trigano-owned Roller Team makes most of its model range in Italy, although there is a small assembly operation for the UK market post-Brexit. European Motorhomes have built a strong communicative relationship with its source manufacturer.

Review (5 stars):

Great, helpful staff. We bought a motorhome from them and felt very well supported. We didn't know anything about operating a motorhome (especially not in NZ) and got a good introduction. Also, there was an issue with the electricity (not their fault) and we got professional help from them straight away.

– Anika

Zion Motorhomes

Google Star Rating: 4.9

Google give an almost perfect score for this importer and retailer of the luxury German motorhomes made by Frankia, Dethleff, and Niesmann + Bischoff. Customers regularly comment on the personalised service provided by Zion owner, Jonas Ng, and find the 3D 360-degree virtual tours available on the dealership website helpful when deciding which model to buy.

Review (5 stars):

“I have nothing but praise for Zion staff. Since we purchased a new Dethleffs Trend we have had the highest level of care and attention. Any after-sales work was done to very high standards, and we have always been welcomed as not just another customer. I can highly recommend them.”

– Colin & Alison

Wilderness Motorhome Sales

Google Star rating: 4.6

yard AKL premises

As the exclusive seller of premium new Carado, Bürstner and HYMER motorhomes since 2012, Wilderness offers strong after-sales support and carefully builds long-term relationships with its buyers. It has consistently excellent customer reviews, and there’s genuine ongoing interest in the quality of your ownership experience, along with plenty of tips and advice on how to improve it. It’s also a B-Corp-certified company, meaning it meets high standards for social and environmental impact.

Review (5 stars):

We bought a used campervan from Wilderness. And to be honest, we could not be happier. The service leading up to the purchase was thorough and no question was too silly. We were new to the whole campervanning experience. The campervan itself was in such good condition considering it was used. Like new! We love our camper and enjoy monthly trips away. We can see many more adventures to come and definitely recommend Wilderness to anyone considering a new or used campervan.

– Sunlover

RV Super Centre

Google star rating: 4.1

Tourism Holdings Limited (THL) has transformed the old Villa Maria winery into a massive 2,000sqm showroom. This one-stop shop in Auckland handles everything from accessories to both new and used rigs. If you're looking for something pre-loved, they sell the motorhomes retired from their own rental fleet. For new models, they offer New Zealand-made options from Action Manufacturing (under the KEA and Talvor brands) alongside imports like Roller Team and Laika.

Since launching the first RV Super Centre back in 2012, THL has built a solid reputation with generally positive feedback from its customers.

Review (5 stars):

Buying a camper sight unseen from overseas can be a bit nerve-wracking. However, Wenke, the sales representative I had been emailing and calling before arriving in Auckland, was incredibly friendly, honest, and responsive. When we arrived, we were welcomed into a beautiful showroom and received a campervan exactly as we had hoped for. It was a positive experience from start to finish. The new showroom also features an impressive selection of high-quality camping gear — full of very tempting products!

– Ben

TrailLite

Google star rating: None

As New Zealand’s oldest RV manufacturer, TrailLite has been building custom motorhomes and caravans right here for over 70 years. While you won't always find a single official star rating for them online, the feedback from their own community is incredibly positive.

Alongside their bespoke, Kiwi-made rigs, they offer a great range of European imports like Benimar, McLouis, Mobilvetta, Elddis, and Xplore – most of which come from the well-regarded Trigano Group in Southern Europe. Whether you're after something locally crafted or a stylish import, their long history makes them a very trusted name in the industry.

Review (Facebook):

The people are amazing, and the motorhomes are fantastic! We're living in ours permanently (at least the next two years or so), and the Benimar are so well finished! Well done TrailLite! Your after-sales service and communication is superb!

Who are the top-rated motorhome dealers in Christchurch?

If you’ve noticed more motorhomes on the road in Canterbury lately, you’re not imagining it. Christchurch is cementing its spot as the South Island's RV capital, with data from the 2019 –2025 Motorhome Market Industry Report showing a 38% year-on-year growth in 2025. Here are the picks of the bunch in our largest South Island city:

Wilderness Motorhome Sales

Google Star Rating: 5.0 stars

wilderness CHCH premises

Since opening its Christchurch doors in 2007, Wilderness has become a go-to for premium European imports. They’ve been offering Erwin Hymer Group brands – specifically Carado, Bürstner, and HYMER – since 2012, and their perfect five-star Google rating speaks for itself. Customers frequently highlight their thorough handover process when picking up a new rig, and the "exceptional after-sales service" ensures you’re well looked after long after you leave the lot. Its B-Corp certification means it takes environmental impact seriously, and has met high social, environmental and governance standards.

Review (5 stars):

The Wilderness team provided very thoughtful, helpful, and timely communication and support as we purchased our first motorhome. They assisted us to set up some additional solar and battery power (and patiently answered a thousand other questions) before we picked it up for our inaugural adventures. And we have not looked back! Way better than average service from an outstanding crew.

– Marion

JAYCO Canterbury

Google Star rating: 4.6

First established in 1966, this family-owned business is one of New Zealand’s longest-running RV dealerships. It now exclusively sells the Australian-made motorhomes, camping trailers, caravans, and campervans made by the iconic JAYCO brand. Reviews regularly mention the dealership’s quick responses to any issues that come up after the sale, and the detailed handover process.

Review (5 stars):

Absolutely outstanding service. Not only is this team knowledgeable, they are welcoming, accommodating, and friendly. It feels like family. I can honestly say it was seamless and a thoroughly enjoyable experience buying a caravan from these wonderful people!

– Jennifer

UCC Motorhomes and Caravans

Google Star Rating: 4.4

This dealership is a great example of an RV manufacturer successfully shifting gears to become a retailer. When new owners took over UCC in 2008, they began moving away from wholesale, really hitting their stride in 2014 as the South Island outlet for Zion’s imported Dethleffs motorhomes. Since then, they’ve added the German brand Sunlight to the mix and now have the exclusive rights to sell ex-rental Dethleffs models retired from the McRent fleet.

Review (5 stars):

We purchased a traded in van from Rob and his team. What quickly became apparent was their depth of knowledge/experience, particularly with Ross and the Service team. We found a couple of minor issues after collecting the van and they sorted them out promptly/equitably. We love the van, thanks UCC :)

– Glyn

CMG Campers

Google Star Rating: 4.3

The Cockram Motor Group doesn’t do things by halves when it decides to enter a new automotive sector. Three years ago, CMG built a large, flashy new dealership and then filled it with new Swift motorhomes complemented by Regent, Snowy River, and New Age caravans. Much of the stock can be viewed inside the showroom thanks to huge German-made sliding doors that enclose the area and permit motorhomes to enter and exit. The salespeople are quick to invite customers to sit on the adjacent luxurious furniture and enjoy a hot beverage while discussing their dream RV.

Review (5 stars):

Great experience, Andrew and Geshan were great to deal with, very patient and understanding of our caution with this investment. We had a few laughs on the way. Handover was thorough and vehicle presentation great. Many thanks again to the whole team at CMG.

– Garry

RV Super Centre

Google Star rating: 4.1

Tourism Holdings Limited (THL) Branch in Christchurch

The second-largest RV Super Centre offers the same great lineup as the Auckland branch, featuring NZ-made KEA and Talvor models alongside European imports like Laika and Roller Team. Since this location serves as the main hub for THL’s South Island rental fleet, you’ll also find a well-stocked accessory shop and a large service area on-site.

Because it's located near the airport, the team deals with hundreds of rental travellers during the busy season, which can sometimes impact their overall Google score. However, if you look closely at the reviews, you’ll see that customers visiting specifically to buy a motorhome or grab some gear are generally very happy with the service they receive.

Review (5 stars):

We brought a used Hitop camper from RVSuperCentre a year ago and had great service from Melinda, Liz and Corey. RVSuperCentre modified our van to get a yellow certification for us, and we’ve had one service completed so far. The retail shop is super handy, and the staff are friendly. It can be busy with pickups and drop-offs for the rental part of the business, but this just adds a busy vibe to the place.

How important is after-sales support when choosing a motorhome dealer?

wilderness chch workshop

Think of after-sales support as your safety net while you're exploring the open road. It’s the difference between a minor hiccup and a ruined holiday. Because motorhomes are essentially tiny houses on wheels, they come with complex systems. You’ll want a dealer with the technical expertise to handle specialised gas, electrical, and plumbing issues. Using authorised service agents ensures your repairs stay warranty-covered.

Beyond peace of mind, great support is a financial win. High-quality servicing and repairs will boost your motorhome’s resale value when it’s time to trade up.

The parts problem

One of the biggest hurdles in the industry is parts availability. As Wilderness Motorhome Sales retail sales consultant Joe Barton points out, the difference between a good dealer and a great one often comes down to what’s sitting on their shelves. Some owners face months-long waits for parts shipped from overseas, while top-tier dealers invest in stocking parts locally to get you back on the road faster.

A good dealership will:

  • Feature dedicated servicing and maintenance

  • Have robust warranty management

  • Provide advice on accessories and upgrades

  • Follow a detailed handover process

  • Have access to a nationwide service network

  • Offer pre-trip and seasonal checks

Red Flags: Keep an eye out for salespeople who push for a "quick sale" or dealers who can’t give you straight answers to technical questions. If the price seems unusually low, they might be cutting corners on the support you'll need later.

icons8-quote-90

Access to parts is a common hurdle for many owners without access to after-sales support. We regularly hear stories of customers waiting for months for parts to arrive from overseas, with windscreens for A-class models being a particularly common example. Local support and parts availability can make or break the ownership experience.

Joe Barton, Wilderness retail sales consultant.
