Here’s what’s included when you purchase a new premium German motorhome from us:

HYMER’s ML-T 580 brings serious touring credentials to the table – all-wheel drive, off-grid readiness, and German engineering from front to back. However, it’s the innovative design and quiet luxury inside that really make it stand out.
German motorhome manufacturer HYMER has established a reputation built on substance, setting a benchmark for European-built motorhomes. With more than 60 years of experience behind them, the HYMER name has become synonymous with quality, safety, and forward-thinking design.
That legacy is clear in the ML-T 580, one of their most compact semi-integrated models. Available exclusively through Wilderness Motorhomes, this is the only premium quality 4×4 motorhome of this level in New Zealand – there is simply nothing to compare it to.
From its all-wheel drive capability and advanced driving technology to the well-considered interior layout, this motorhome is equally suited to bumpy back roads and remote freedom camping sites as it is to open roads and powered campgrounds.
If you’re looking for something that blends comfort with a genuine sense of freedom, the ML-T 580 is worth a closer look.

There’s a lot to like about what’s happening up front in the ML-T 580. Built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 419 CDI chassis, it provides a solid foundation that combines capability and comfort. And because the chassis has been upgraded to a 4100kg GVM, you get a generous payload for your gear.
Chunky 16-inch black steel wheels and all-terrain tyres give it a bit of extra grip too, especially when things get loose underfoot. With a 190HP engine and 9-speed automatic transmission under the hood, and all-wheel drive as standard, the setup is well-suited to New Zealand’s more unpredictable routes.
The cab itself is a comfortable, well-spec’d space. Both seats are heated and come with an extendable cushion for better leg support — small touches that make a big difference.
The multi-function leather steering wheel and adaptive cruise control make driving that much more relaxing, and the infotainment system is well-equipped with built-in navigation, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The elevated position provides excellent visibility, and the reversing camera takes the pressure off when it comes to parking.

The layout of the ML-T 580 follows a familiar European format, but it has been refined in a way that makes everyday living feel effortless. The rear is dedicated to the bedroom, with twin single beds that can be converted into a full-width king.
In the centre, you’ll find the bathroom on one side and the kitchen on the other, with the dining area up front. Beneath it all, a generous tunnel garage runs the full width of the vehicle.
The overall impression is one of lightness and openness that’s thoughtfully put together. The flat floor throughout gives a seamless feel between zones, while the neutral colour palette — a mix of soft greys, light timber and cream — keeps things calm and understated. Subtle curves in the cabinetry and furnishings help soften the space, giving it a more contemporary feel than many in this category.
Overhead skylights in the cab, lounge, and bedroom bring in ample natural light during the day, contributing to the sense of spaciousness. It’s a smart, modern layout that makes good use of every available inch.

The compact kitchen is designed with real-life use in mind. The bench is fitted with a three-burner gas hob and flush cover, which doubles as extra prep space when you’re not cooking. There’s also a hinged benchtop extension for when you need a little more room to spread out.
Black tapware adds a modern touch, and the deep stainless-steel sink is practical without taking over the whole bench. A generous window behind the bench brings in plenty of light and fresh air.
Storage is solid, too. The deep kitchen drawers glide smoothly, and the top drawer has a clever hidden cutlery tray inside, which helps keep things tidy. The fridge is a good size, measuring 128 litres, and includes a separate 18-litre freezer compartment. There’s also a dedicated grill unit – a welcome addition for toast, quick bakes or simple oven meals.
Opposite the kitchen is the L-shaped dinette with a comfy seat and a passenger cab seat that swivels right around to join the space. The table rotates a full 360 degrees and adjusts easily depending on what you’re doing — dining, working, or just relaxing. There’s a Smart TV mounted above the dinette too, so you can catch the news over breakfast or stream a movie when the weather turns.
Like the rest of the motorhome, the kitchen and lounge area features double-glazed windows with built-in insect and blackout blinds. Overhead, a skylight adds even more light and ventilation.

At the rear of the motorhome, the bedroom setup is simple, flexible, and surprisingly roomy. Single beds run down each side, and with the centre insert in place, they come together to form a full-width king. It’s a clever design that works well for couples who want options — no clambering over each other in the night, and plenty of space either way. A clever hidden ladder inside one of the steps leading up to the bed folds out easily if needed.
The mattresses are multi-zone memory foam with a high-quality topper that’s supportive without being too firm, and the space around the beds is utilised effectively, featuring generous storage lockers underneath and a full-height wardrobe just steps away.
Overhead, a skylight keeps the space feeling light and open, and at night, you have blackout and insect blinds on every window, so you can sleep in during the summer months. There’s also a warm, ambient glow from the reading lights and soft finishes that carry through from the front in the same calming mix of timber, grey and cream tones that make the interior feel considered and inviting from end to end.

The bathroom sits mid-vehicle and makes clever use of a compact footprint. It’s a combined toilet and shower layout, but you still get a dry change area — no wet feet while brushing your teeth.
The setup includes a Thetford cassette toilet with electric flush, a height-adjustable showerhead, and streamlined fittings that feel a step above standard. Ventilation is handled by a roof vent with an integrated insect screen, and built-in cupboards above and below the sink provide handy storage for everyday essentials.

The exterior of the ML-T 580 carries the same level of thought and practicality as the interior. From the roll-out awning with built-in LED lights to the wide habitation door with an electric step, everything feels well-integrated and easy to use. The clean lines, tinted double-glazed windows, and subtle graphics give it a classic HYMER look: Modern, but not flashy.
One of the standout features is the full-width rear garage. It’s big enough to easily fit an e-bike or two, along with outdoor gear, folding chairs, hoses, tools – whatever you travel with. The garage is fully lined, features a checker plate floor, tie-down points, and even includes 12V and 240V power sockets, so you can keep your gear charged while parked up.
There’s also a hot/cold exterior shower tucked inside, which comes in handy for rinsing off sandy feet, muddy boots, or washing down the bikes after a ride. Access is easy from both sides, thanks to twin external doors. With a payload of up to 850kg, there’s plenty of room to pack what you need without worrying about weight.

Beyond the core features, the ML-T 580 includes a solid list of extras that round out the experience. Heating and hot water are handled by the Truma Combi system, which runs on both diesel and electric – a practical setup for both powered sites and off-grid stays. Warm air is ducted throughout the motorhome, with adjustable vents in the bedroom so you can set the temperature to suit.
The onboard power system is designed for flexibility, featuring two 95W solar panels, an 80Ah lithium-ion battery, and a 1000W inverter, all included as standard. That means you’ve got plenty of backup to run essentials when you’re away from mains power.
The lighting is all LED, featuring colour and brightness adjustment, as well as directional reading lights and ambient strip lighting that creates a warm, modern feel after dark. The windows and skylights throughout are double glazed, with integrated blackout and insect blinds – a small feature that makes a big difference for comfort and privacy.
The body construction uses HYMER’s patented PUAL technology, a high-strength, wood-free panel system with closed-cell insulation. It’s built to resist water ingress, minimise thermal bridges, and withstand years of varied weather conditions without warping, swelling, or breaking down. It’s one of the reasons HYMER has such a loyal following in Europe.
Backing that up is a two-year HYMER warranty, a six-year weatherproof guarantee, and a two-year or 200,000km warranty on the Mercedes-Benz base. This gives solid peace of mind, whether you’re travelling occasionally or clocking up serious kilometres.
The HYMER ML-T 580 hits a rare sweet spot: comfortable, capable, and cleverly put together. It has the off-road chops to take you well beyond the usual routes, without sacrificing the features, finish, or driving experience you’d expect from a premium European brand. Inside, it’s all about thoughtful design and everyday liveability, backed by the kind of build quality HYMER is known for.

Motorhoming is so popular in New Zealand that there are plenty to choose from. No one brand suits all, so it’s best to think about your needs and wishes.
If you’re new to the market, it’s worth trying before you buy and renting a few different types of RVs to work out what you like. Most motorhomes are for sale in Auckland or Christchurch, making these cities the most likely places where you'll be able to try a model out.
Before you settle on any particular brand or motorhome model, carefully consider your needs and what your perfect motorhome looks like.
The best used motorhome to purchase is the one that suits your requirements and budget — as well as being resalable. Purchasing from a reputable licensed dealer can be a great option as the motorhome will have a service history, detailed specification information and a warranty.
Always do your due diligence and check that the motorhome is sound and compliant before purchasing — no matter where you're buying from.
Wilderness Motorhomes is the umbrella company. Wilderness Motorhomes Sales handles purchase of new/used motorhomes. Wilderness Motorhomes Rentals lets you hire to experience before you purchase.
Motorhoming is the ideal way to explore New Zealand in comfort. You can get off-the-beaten-track, spend nights under the stars, and wake up to the sound of water lapping on the sand — all from the comfort of your own vehicle.
To find out whether motorhome ownership is worth it, you’ll need to think about your own unique situation. You should consider the initial purchase price as well as ongoing ownership costs.
Motorhome ownership is best suited to those who like to take multiple trips a year and enjoy the flexibility of being able to head off anytime. If this doesn’t sound like you, renting a motorhome may be your best option.
The resale value of a motorhome depends on its condition, what brand it is, any aftermarket additions, and the market. Premium German motorhomes in NZ tend to depreciate less than budget motorhomes because of their reputation for providing many years of trouble-free touring.
The most reliable motorhome is one that will give you many years of trouble-free touring. This means that the base vehicle needs to perform, and the interior fit needs to withstand years of use.
Most premium RVs built on a European base vehicle, such as Mercedes Benz or Fiat Ducato motorhomes, will still perform well after plenty of years and many miles. Unlike a lot of cars, these truck bases are designed to go the distance — even with several hundred thousand kilometres on the clock.
The reliability of the motorhome fitout depends on the quality of the build. This includes materials, construction methods, and quality assurance processes.
German motorhome brands in NZ have built their reputations on quality. For example, Carado motorhomes have a high price-to-value ratio, meaning that quality is not sacrificed even though they're designed for a price-conscious market.
Many locally manufactured motorhomes that are hand-built to high quality standards will also stand the test of time. The best way to get a quick indication of reliability is to check the warranties that a manufacturer offers. Longer warranties indicate that the manufacturer has a high degree of confidence in the reliability of its products.
You don't need a special licence to drive most motorhomes in New Zealand. Your standard Class 1 car licence allows you to drive a motorhome with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of up to 6000kg.
When buying a luxury motorhome in NZ, you’ll want to insure it against any accidental damage. Many car insurers do not cover motorhomes. Most owners choose to insure their motorhomes with specialists who focus solely on motorhome owner's insurance.
The two motorhome specialist insurers in New Zealand are Covi and Star Insurance. When choosing an insurance company, be sure to shop around and read insurance policies carefully to see if they cover what you require.
